Main purpose of the job

Reporting to the Divisional Executive, the main purpose of the role is to actively participate in the day to day management of the Technical division through an improved focus on innovation and specialised client solutions.

JOB DESCRIPTION

Duties and responsibilities

  • Keep abreast of technical product developments and market requirements
  • Maintain regular contact with key technical personnel within our principal’s organisations in order to stay abreast of technical developments and to build meaningful resources and relationships
  • Maintain regular contact with key technical personnel within our customer’s organisations in order to meet their immediate and future needs and to establish meaningful relationships
  • Manage the work done by sub-contractors and sub-ordinates and instigate corrective action when required
  • Negotiate acceptable pricing from sub–contractors for a particular job
  • Ensure that an acceptable profit margin per job is maintained
  • Ensure completion of work within agreed cost parameters
  • Conduct root cause investigation into equipment failure and make recommendations regarding suitable repair techniques
  • Generate reports as required regarding assessment, findings and repairs conducted
  • Identify appropriate contractors in case of specialist type of repairs that are able to carry out work to classification society and OEM standards and make recommendations
  • Generate Gantt charts (timeframe-based work progress schedules) for time sensitive jobs
  • Manage the repair work progress in order to ensure that standards and time frames are adhered to
  • Conduct reinstatement and testing of machinery and equipment in accordance with OEM instructions after completion of repairs
  • Manage the upkeep of the building, company vehicles, as well as machinery and equipment
  • Maintain good IR (Industrial Relations) and ensure compliance with OHSA (Occupational Health and Safety Administration) requirements at all times
  • Maintain safety standards and ensure customer safety requirements are complied with
  • Arrange attendance at safety induction for contractors with the customer prior to commencement of work
  • Achieving the monetary targets as per budgeted objectives
  • Submit written justifications regarding capital expenditure and staff additions
  • Implementing strategy agreed to with management in order to develop core business activities

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

Qualifications

  • Engineering Degree or Diploma in Mechanical Engineering or Marine Engineering
  • Additional qualification in Project management will be an added advantage

Experience

  • 4 to 5 years in a senior management position with experience in the ship repair industry
  • Experience in heavy engineering or steelmaking industry
  • At least 5 concurrent years project management experience within the marine industry or industrial engineering sector
  • Experience in tender evaluation, compilation, submission and negotiation on multi-disciplinary and medium to large refit, overhaul, modification, optimisation and re-engineering projects
  • Experience in leading in a multidisciplinary, mechanical engineering environment

Skills, competencies and attributes

  • Have a working knowledge of applicable legislature including the OHS Act, BCEA and related legislation
  • Registration with the South African Institute of Mechanical Engineers would be preferable
